SOME OF OUR MEMBERS AT ÖVEDS POLO CLUB

Our head trainer and board member Jack Shirley, joined ÖPC 2022, our founding year.

Jack from the USA, is a 3rd generation horseman and 2nd generation polo player, teamed up with his father for many polo years in his younger days. Jack continued polo through college years and later some years professionally.

A career shift lead Jack to owning and managing riding schools with focus horsemanship, dressage and jumping. At the same time he trained for international dressage trainers and successfully competed at medium levels.

Next stop in life was Skåne, Sweden! Jack, with family, owned and managed a breeding farm and riding school for several years. Then a career shift to business entrepreneurship.

Fast forward to one day in 2020, Jack went to watch polo game at a grassroots club nearby. Two players outshined all other players! Feeling polo roots in the air, introductions were made with Benny & Susanna.

With mutual viewpoints on horsemanship and polo, the relationship quickly grew and ÖPC is now on the map in the greater polo world!

Why I play Polo
An unbeatable wonderful feeling spreads throughout the body when you get it from horseback. It lasts long afterwards and is highly addictive.

Interests:
Riding high-wheelers, practicing motor sports as well as more quiet activities such as building maintenance, antiques and British association croquet.

Why I play Polo:
Has never been sporty but likes horses and loves to ride out. Tried Polo because my husband Per has been doing it for a few years and I always thought it looked cool when he played.

Didn't think it would suit me because I'm cautious and have a lot of self-preservation instinct but it's the most fun sport I've ever tried

Interest:
Loves to go to Rammstein concerts, garden design, studies Italian and likes to pet cats with one hand and have a glass of champagne in the other.

Why polo?
My family and I lived for a couple of years in the US. I am born there, a proud American girl loving the American culture which left a deep impact in my life. My father who was a passionate rider introduced me into the equestrian world very early.

I rode dressage most of the time. Five years ago I decided to make a change. I booked polo lessons at Win Polo School owned by Thomas Winter in Hamburg, Germany and got heavily addicted.

Playing polo is passion. It means everything to me so do the polo ponies. The world of polo is my private life, my everything, my amusement, my joy in life.

Why I play Polo 
For me it’s a lifestyle and I would say that the most important after the lovely horses and the game is the friendship within the club and around the polo globe. 

Interests: 
Except polo, it’s like spending time with my wife and kids, house/farm work,  gardening and cooking.

Benny performs the most fantastiskt stick work. What else to expect from a former floorball champion. He also introduced the term “hosse-slag” (unclean hitting) to the sport even though he seldom perform them in person.

Why I play Polo 
Polo is the ultimate fun sport to play. Being able to ride horses with men and women playing the same sport is a favour few other sports can achieve.

Sebastian always arrives with a lovely smile and with an enormous amount of positive energy, he is the most well trained and hard hitting member, but when he sits in the saddle he puts the horse first and swing gently.

He now goes under the name "No Force" stated by Deepankar.

Why I play Polo 
I was introduced to the sport in Colombia 15 years ago. Had been doing show jumping and eventing prior to that but when polo came into the picture I was hooked and from that moment It's only been polo for me!

Horses, polo, traveling, farm life

It is always a pleasure watching Susanna both on and off the polo field. In particular is her attention to detail, mounted or dismounted or in stable management. Susanna always has horsemanship her highest priority. On game days her polo riding skills play a huge part of improving her game. Susanna is a super team player and always generous with tips and input for all players both beginners and seasoned.

Why I play polo:
Riding is my passion. As soon as I tried polo, I knew this was a sport for me. It's demanding but at the same time gives great satisfaction. Horse-human connection, strategy, speed and constant learning makes it just amazing

When you see Paulina playing polo you can easy see in here face that she loves this sport, and she always tries her best to improve here game.

Why polo?
Horses accompanied me my whole life. My father introduced me to horses very early. Of course! My family and I breed and sell horses for all kind of purposes.

All my success I have had until now is thanks to my father. He is my mentor and my idol.

As a teenager I competed successfully in barrel racing. I reached the top as an Argentine champion. My father supported me. But polo became more important to me through the years. This is why I decided to play in a team at our local polo club. As an experienced horse trainer, polo trainer, polo player and certified farrier I decided to work for the last season at the Great Trippetts Polo Club outside Liphook, UK.

But for this season I will join with great pleasure the members at Öveds Polo Club in Sjöbo, Sweden.

I am looking forward to an exciting season at the club. Let's contribute and increase the amount of polo players and the interest in polo here.

Why I play polo:
The polo sport made me buy a horse again and turn my villa on the country side to a horse farm. I enjoys the challenging complexity of the game and loves to experience the special bond between human and horse.

Other interests:
Drink champagne - anywhere, anytime and in any situation.

Club's comments:

Frida have played polo with us even before we started this club 2022. Frida is a good rider and she have improved here polo a lot, and her peak year was 2023 when she practiced polo several times a week and that gave here a great foundation and great polo skills.
